Remembrance Day is special.
In a triumphalist world it is special that once a year we choose not to glory in our victories, but to commemorate those who have fallen. The poppy is a symbol of heroism – but the heroism of sacrifice, not of victory.
I used to be scared of disabled people.
Not scared that they would bite, but terrified that they might talk to me. What if I can’t understand what they’re saying? What if I say the wrong thing?
Best to utter the usual platitudes of admiration and sympathy. And move on quickly.
That all changed the day I met Angela.
Tomorrow marks six months since I was elected to Brent Council. It’s been the most exhilarating, exhausing and rewarding period of my life.
